3 Seconds Test for a Successful Website

successful website Websites Deliver Business
Most of us know how to dress nicely and speak clearly, right? The crazy thing is business owners spend thousands on driving and directing people to their websites only to have them arrive at a website that comes up short. Visitors are greeted by your online “salesperson” and its almost like your website has a five o’clock shadow, speaks in tongues, is difficult to understand, did nothing about wearing a pressed suit and doesn’t ask for the sale. Leading The Strategic Changes

leading strategy Implementing new strategies, new directions, new objectives, is introducing change, major change, into the organisation. As such it is essential that the implementation is approached, managed, in a similar fashion to that adopted when major changes are being made. The implementation of the changes must be planned, implemented as smoothly as possible, and then be monitored and evaluated for progress and performance against the desired outcomes, objectives, that were the drivers of the change. The leader must ensure that all aspects of the changes, the new strategic plan, are managed successfully. Read more »

Difficulties and Dyslexia

dyslexia Dyslexia is a language-based disorder that is characterized by difficulty with decoding single words. This difficulty is normally a reflection of the individuals inability to properly phonological process words. It is important to note that dyslexia has nothing to do with any sort of visual impairment, and that they can severly hamper an individual’s ability to read.

Dyslexia includes the inability to:
- Name letters
- Read words and/or sentences
- Recognize words directly (even if the individual can sound them out) Read more »

Android Is Either “Winning” Because Apple Is Letting It, Or Losing

In September 2010, I wrote a post that ignited an absolute shitstorm around these parts. “Shitstorm” in this case meaning a post with a thousand comments, the majority of which were spewed up by rabid Android fanatics. The title of that post:

Is Android Surging Only Because Apple Is Letting It?

At the time, we were in the midst of a massive Android surge to the top of the smartphone ecosystem food chain. This was happening all around the world, but the focus of this particular post was the U.S. market. Based on some comments made by developer David Beach at the time, I wondered if, as the title suggested, Android was only doing so well in the U.S. because the iPhone was still only available on one carrier, AT&T? Today’s Comment Limitations Are Due To Spam Filter, Not Censorship

An automated Facebook spam filter gone slightly awry, not purposeful censorship, is to blame for startup enthusiast Robert Scoble and some other commenters getting blocked, according to a company spokesperson.

Users attempting to comment on blog posts have recently been prevented from doing so, with warning text from the company saying that “this comment can’t be posted” because it is “irrelevant or inappropriate.” We’ve heard back from Facebook, and here’s what it says has been going on.

The company says that the intention is to bar spammy or abusive commenters. Scoble’s comment was specifically blocked because of its length, and the length of the comment thread it was on. Long and popular threads are particularly attractive to spammers as they provide the largest distribution for whatever content is being spammed. Facebook also may block other types of comments that go against positive conversation, such as some ASCII art. Other factors may include who you’re commenting on, how long the comment is, and who is commenting. Read more »

Music sales fall again in 2011, but optimism grows

LONDON – Digital music revenues rose eight percent in 2011 to $US5.2 billion, but it was not enough to prevent another annual decline in the overall market to $US16.2 billion from $US16.7 billion in 2010.

Figures released on Monday by record industry body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) confirmed expectations that a downward trend which began in the late 1990s continued last year.

The good news was that the 2011 decline of around three per cent was smaller than the eight percent drop in 2010, and there were signs that the industry was finally beginning to get on top of the rampant online piracy it blames for its woes. Read more »

RIM chief: physical BlackBerry keyboards not going away

Research in Motion CEO Thorsten Heins moved to reassure the BlackBerry faithful that it was not killing off the physical keyboard, as had been reported widely by some after a touch screen prototype device with a virtual on-screen keyboard was shown off by the company.

In a rare question and answer session with media at the company’s BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday in the US, the chief executive officer said the BlackBerry maker had never stated it would kill off the physical keyboard.  Read more »

Scientists Watch Black Hole Feast on Unlucky Star

Scientists have witnessed the rare spectacle of a supermassive black hole devouring a star that had ventured too close – an event that occurs about once in 10,000 years, they reported on Wednesday.

Matter-sucking black holes normally lurk dormant and undetected at the centre of galaxies, but can occasionally be tracked by the scraps left over from their stellar feasts.

“Black holes, like sharks, suffer from a popular misconception that they are perpetual killing machines,” said researcher Ryan Chornock from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Massachusetts. Read more »
